CountryMax Starts Construction on 19th Location | News

CountryMax Stores, a family-owned business with retail stores across Upstate New York, has begun construction on its 19th location at 1651 Clark Street Rd, Auburn, N.Y.

CountryMax is expanding the existing building’s footprint to approximately 26,000 square feet, which is in line with the retailer’s newer store models in Batavia, Oswego and Webster. The targeted opening is April 2023.

CountryMax Stores feature the area’s largest selection of pet supplies, all major brands of dog and cat food, extensive wild bird seed options and feeders, lawn & garden essentials, all kinds of backyard and home décor, unique climate-controlled small pet rooms, hard-to-find “country store” food products from brands like Jake & Amos, and locally made hot sauces.

“People are amazed by the incredible variety of products you can find here,” says Brad Payne, director of sales. “We’re not like any other store in the country, literally, and we’re excited to show Auburn exactly what that means. Where else can you bring your dog in for a wash and a free treat, let your kids go see the bunnies and the bearded dragons in the next section, send your significant other over to the lawn and garden department for a bag of grass seed and a hose nozzle, hit the wild bird section to snag a bag of premium bird seed for the feeders, and grab a unique snack or locally made treat for yourself on the way back to the registers? We’re excited to bring that unique mix into the community in Auburn and the surrounding areas very soon.”

The store will feature as self-serve dog wash station with multiple tubs, warm water and dog-friendly shampoos, high-powered air dryers and super-absorbent quick dry towels.

Unique features planned for the Auburn store include a large, rustic timber entryway with custom-built chandelier. Custom displays and décor themed specifically built to honor Auburn’s unique heritage are also planned.

The location will have event room for hosting children’s birthday parties, dog training classes, canning and homesteading demonstrations, backyard chicken seminars, small group meetings, plus scheduled guest speakers from Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Montezuma Audubon Society and many others.

A functioning horse stall will also be featured in the store, which will be perfect for showcasing local 4-H prize winners, equine education seminars and more, company officials said.

It will also feature an approximately 15,000-square-foot live plant nursery yard with timber- framed shade structure.

Like most CountryMax locations, Auburn will feature a fully built-out nursery yard and greenhouse. The warehouse will contain over 50 types of livestock feed, and the exterior yards will hold soils, mulches, stone and other “big bag” lawn and garden items.

“We’re so excited to be adding this location in Auburn, because it’s exactly the type of community CountryMax serves best,” Payne said. “Homeowners who take real pride in their lawns, gardens, pets and outdoor hobbies. With strong roots in Rochester and a growing presence in Syracuse, Auburn is the perfect bridge store between the two markets.”

Approximately 20-25 full- and part-time employees will be hired to operate the retail store, including specialists in pet nutrition, lawn and garden, small animals, nursery stock, and wild bird supplies.
